The Sheriff Arrived With the Letter He Burned and a Truth Patrick Couldn’t Deny-thuyhien

The sheriff’s truck did not come fast.

It came steady.

Dust rose behind the front tires, pale and thick, curling over the ditch where the firewood had scattered. The horses stamped in the road. Adriana stood with one gloved hand over her mouth. Patrick froze with his arm half-extended toward me, close enough that I could see the gold stitching on his cuff, far enough that his hand still belonged to another life.

The pain across my stomach tightened again.

I folded one arm under my belly and kept the other hand locked around the sonogram beneath my bodice.

“Ma’am,” the sheriff called from his open window, “stay right where you are.”

Patrick turned, breathing hard. “Sheriff Miller, help her. She’s my wife.”

The sheriff stepped out slowly.

His boots hit the dirt with a dull scrape. He was a broad-shouldered man in his fifties, gray at the temples, with a coffee stain near the pocket of his tan uniform and a face that did not rush even when the world did. Behind him, a young deputy climbed out holding a black medical bag.

Sheriff Miller looked at Patrick’s hand, then at me.

“Mr. Vargas,” he said, “take three steps back.”

Patrick’s face twisted. “She’s bleeding.”

“I can see that.”

“Then move.”

The sheriff’s voice stayed low. “I said back.”

For the first time that afternoon, Patrick obeyed someone.

The deputy hurried toward me, but he stopped when I lifted two fingers.

“No men touching me,” I said.

My voice sounded thinner than I wanted. Dust stuck to the sweat under my chin. The smell of horse leather, dry bark, and iron filled my nose. My knees trembled, but I kept them locked.

Sheriff Miller turned to the deputy. “Radio Mae from the clinic. Tell her it’s urgent. Pregnant patient, possible labor, road marker twelve.”

The deputy ran back to the truck.

Patrick stared at me as if every second I refused him cut into his skin.

“Ines, please,” he whispered. “Let me take you to the hospital.”

“You don’t take me anywhere anymore.”

Adriana made a small sound behind him.
