The Probate Investigator At My Father’s Funeral Had A Folder With My Stepmother’s Name-QuynhTranJP

Marcus Vale did not step inside until I moved first.

He stood under the porch light with rain shining on the shoulders of his black coat, a county seal stamped across the folder in his left hand. Behind him, a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy waited beside the walkway, one palm resting near his radio, eyes fixed past me into the house.

Linda made one small sound from the hallway.

Not fear. Calculation.

‘This is a family matter,’ she said, smoothing the front of her funeral dress. Her pearl pin tilted crookedly where her hand had jerked earlier. ‘We just buried my husband.’

Marcus looked at her the way men like him look at locked doors.

Patient. Already holding the key.

‘Mrs. Whitaker, my name is Marcus Vale. We spoke by phone on Monday.’

Linda’s face tightened so quickly the powder at the corners of her mouth cracked.

‘You must be mistaken.’

Ethan hid behind my thigh. The torn drawing brushed my calf. His breathing came hot and uneven through the fabric of my skirt.

Marcus lowered his gaze to him for half a second, then back to Linda.

Linda lifted her chin.

‘You can come back another day.’

The deputy stepped onto the porch.

Marcus opened the folder.

‘The court prefers tonight.’

Linda reached for the wall as if the house had shifted under her feet.

I looked down at the bank receipt in my hand. The paper had softened from my grip. $63,000. Three days before Dad died. The ink line beneath the withdrawal amount seemed darker than everything else in the house.

Marcus nodded toward it.

‘May I see that, Ms. Whitaker?’

Linda moved fast.

Her hand came toward mine, nails pale and polished, fingers spread.
