“Where is your mother?”

“Yes.”

My mother’s hand shot out and closed around my wrist.

“She’s always been theatrical,” Mom said toward the phone.
Patricia’s voice came back, clear now. “Marilyn, I kept the hospital bracelet.”
My mother’s fingers went slack.
For the first time that night, her face emptied.
The attic became all sound: the pipe ticking, my pulse in my ears, June’s tiny breath over the monitor, Patricia saying my name like she was trying not to scare a child.
“What bracelet?” I asked.
My mother whispered, “Hang up.”
Patricia did not.

My mother lifted her chin.
