The county called it a closed case. The neighbors called it justice. The people who never liked my mother called it proof that some women finally show who they are when the house goes quiet enough.
What they really meant was this: once a story gets simple, people stop asking whether it is true.
My mother did not get the luxury of complexity. She got a kitchen floor, a dead husband, a knife under her bed, and blood on her robe. She got a jury that heard the version of events that fit the shape of fear. And I got to be seventeen years old and learn that doubt can become a kind of betrayal if you leave it alone long enough.

My father was not an easy man, but that was never the same as saying he deserved what happened to him. He was there before the ambulance, there before the officers finished talking, there before my mother had even been fully escorted out of the kitchen. He said he had found my father on the floor. He said my mother had been distraught. He said he had checked the bedroom because he knew she was upset and wanted to make sure the children were safe.
