At The Wedding Microphone, One Forged Signature Made My Ex-Husband Drop His Glass-thuyhien

Edward’s hand closed around the microphone before Ryan could move.

For one clean second, the entire ballroom held its breath.

The string quartet had stopped mid-note. A server froze near the dessert table with six champagne flutes balanced on a silver tray. Somewhere near the back, a child laughed too loudly, then went quiet when his mother touched his shoulder.

Ryan’s glass remained suspended near his mouth.

His smile had not vanished all at once. It drained slowly, like color leaving fabric in bleach.

Edward did not yank the microphone from the officiant. He did not raise his voice. He leaned close, said something private, and the officiant looked at the cream folder in Edward’s hand.

Then he stepped aside.

Ryan’s mother pushed back her chair.

“This is a family event,” she said, still soft, still polished.

Edward turned just enough to face her.

“So was the sale of the house.”

A ripple moved through the front tables.

I felt Mason’s hand tighten around two of my fingers. Milo was half-hidden in my skirt, his small forehead pressed into the fabric, breathing warm through his nose.

Ryan lowered the glass.

“Marina,” he said, smiling again but without teeth. “Don’t embarrass yourself.”

I did not answer him.

My purse strap dug into my shoulder. The folder was heavier than paper should have been. I could smell roses, buttercream, perfume, and the sharp metallic bite of fear coming off my own skin.

Edward tapped the microphone once.

A dull pop cracked through the speakers.

“My name is Edward Cole,” he said. “I am not a member of this family. I am, however, the managing partner of the investment group that unknowingly purchased the Hayes residence two years ago through a third-party entity.”

Ryan took one step forward.

His new wife grabbed his wrist.

Edward continued.

“This afternoon, Mrs. Marina Hayes was shown documents connected to that transaction. One of those documents contains a notarized authorization allegedly signed by her.”

Ryan laughed once.
