That was enough to keep me starving for years.

At fifteen, I won a statewide science award, and he had flowers sent to the school with a card that read Proud of you, Alyssa. At seventeen, he told a room full of surgeons at a fundraiser that I was going to work in medicine because I had ‘steady hands and discipline.’ I carried those moments like counterfeit bills. They looked real enough in the dark.

Grandpa Samuel saw through all of it. He never contradicted my father in public unless he had to, but he watched the room the way old sailors watch water. He knew where the rip current sat even when the surface looked flat.

By the time I was twelve, I had learned to read danger through sound. The ice in Richard’s scotch. The pause before he used my full name. The hush from staff when Hunter had broken something and I was about to be blamed for it.
