Sarah struggled to breathe.
“Rivals like me.”
“Like you, like Marcus, and any children you have,” Maria confirmed.
“So Richard wasn’t just after Marcus’s fortune. He wanted our baby to have a claim on Victor’s hidden cash too.”
“He was playing both sides.”
“Exactly,” Maria said. “Marry you to get access to Marcus’s clean money, then use his own child’s bloodline to claim a piece of Victor’s dirty money.”
Sarah saw her own terror mirrored in Marcus’s eyes.
“How many people are after us?”
“At the very least, Victor’s two sons and their crew, Richard, and anyone Victor owes money to.”
The scale of it all was dizzying. Sarah thought she was just dealing with a cheating husband. Instead, she was trapped in a criminal plot spanning generations, with millions of dollars and murderers involved.
“What about Tom?” she asked.
“Tom is filled with regret and is completely terrified,” Maria answered. “He realized what he had done and tried to stop, but it was too late. They have enough on him to ruin his life if he stops helping them.”
“We have to do something.”
“We will,” Marcus promised. “But our first job is to keep you safe. If Victor’s sons find out Richard’s plan is failing, they will look for other solutions.”
“Other solutions?”
Maria and Marcus exchanged another glance.
And Sarah knew there was more.
“Show her the timeline,” Marcus said.
Maria produced one last document. It showed important dates from their family’s past next to some strange coincidences.
“I do not get it.”
“Your mother’s car accident was two days after Victor’s last appeal was rejected,” Maria pointed out. “Richard met you six months after Marcus’s company went public. And Richard’s people first contacted your stepfather a week after Victor’s sons were released from prison.”
“You believe this was all planned for years?”
“I believe this was planned from the day your mother died,” Marcus said. “Victor’s sons have been watching us for decades, waiting for their chance. Richard was either in the right place at the right time to help, or he has been working for them from the start. We are still trying to figure that out.”
Maria added, “The deception was overwhelming.”
“So everyone has been lying to me? My husband, my stepfather—”
“Not everyone,” Marcus said softly. “Tom made a terrible mistake, but he loves you. And now you have family that will do anything to protect you.”
“So what happens now?”
Maria leaned forward.
“It means you vanish until we handle these threats. A new identity, a secret location, and twenty-four-hour security until the baby is born and we have taken care of everyone with a claim on this family.”
“How long will that take?”
“Months, maybe more.”
Sarah imagined spending her pregnancy in hiding while others fought her battles. Part of her wanted that, but another part hated it.
“What if I do not want to disappear? What if I want to fight?”
“Then you are risking your life and the baby’s life,” Marcus stated flatly. “These people have already killed once. They will do it again.”
“You really think they murdered Mom?”
“I think her accident happened at a very convenient time for people who wanted her out of the way.”
Sarah rested her hands on her stomach, feeling the baby move. For the first time, she truly understood this was not just about her. Her choices now would impact an innocent child who deserved a safe life, free from the violence that had defined her own and Marcus’s childhood.
“Okay,” she said. “I will disappear. But I want updates, and I want a say in how this ends. I refuse to spend my life hiding because we were too afraid to solve the problem for good.”
