Aunt Marlene’s jaw shifted.

I looked at her.

“She should open it,” my mother said.

The projector clicked. The frozen image jumped once, then steadied.

Daniel’s voice stayed flat.

Aunt Marlene laughed once.

“That is absurd.”

My skin prickled.

She stopped herself.

Daniel corrected him.

Emily looked at Aunt Marlene.
“But you acted like it was yours.”
Aunt Marlene lifted her chin.
“I protected it.”
“No,” Daniel said.
The word was quiet, but it cut cleaner than shouting.
“You used it.”
He removed a smaller envelope from his folder and placed it on the snack table, away from Aunt Marlene’s reach.
“These are invoices from the last eleven family weddings. Rental fees collected personally. Vendor rebates. Mandatory planning charges. Private donations made to a chapel maintenance account that was closed in 2009.”
My cousin Rachel whispered, “She charged me $6,800.”
Aunt Dana stood near the back wall, her face gray.
“She told us it was required.”
Emily’s rehearsal dress brushed the carpet as she moved toward the projected wall. She did not touch it. She stood beneath Lydia’s frozen face, small and white and suddenly steadier than anyone else in the room.
“How much?” she asked.
Daniel glanced at the file.
