Sheriff Mason Holt did not rush. He stepped out of the county truck, closed the door with one slow hand, and walked up my driveway like he had all the time in the world. That calm alone was enough to change the air.

Carol’s mouth opened, closed, then opened again. The realtor took one half step backward, one heel scraping gravel. Drew finally looked at me instead of the barn.

“Your father said a lot this morning,” I said from the kitchen.

I almost laughed. He had brought a locksmith, a realtor, and a brother with a grin like a crowbar, all before seven in the morning, and he was worried about a spectacle.
Sheriff Holt held up his hand. “Let’s keep this efficient. Mr. Reeves, did you personally obtain consent from the property owner to enter, inspect, or list this land?”
Dad’s jaw worked once. “I’m his father.”
“That was not the question.”
The silence after that felt heavier than the frost on the fence wires.

Then I called Elena.
Captain Elena Brooks had been a JAG officer overseas when I served under a different flag and a different set of rules. She had always been the person who answered the phone when somebody thought paperwork was less dangerous than a gun.
