Not a bedroom. Not a nursery. Not even part of the house, according to every floor plan Mom kept in the kitchen drawer.
But there it was on the back of the scratched wedding photograph, written in dark pencil beneath the face someone had tried to erase: ROOM 7 — DO NOT OPEN AFTER MIDNIGHT.
Mom stood at the bottom of the basement stairs with one hand pressed against her throat. The family Bible lay open near her bare foot, its thin pages trembling in the draft coming from upstairs.
