There was a pause long enough for honesty to walk into the room.
“Amber says you’re doing this because of Diane.”
I nearly smiled. “Amber says a lot of things when reality inconveniences her.”
“No, really. She thinks you want us out so you can start over and pretend none of this happened.”
I set the phone on speaker and rinsed my glass in the sink, listening to the water hit stainless steel. “I don’t need to pretend any of it happened, Brandon. I remember it clearly. His answer came softer than before.
“I know.”
That stopped me for a second.

“You knew then,” I said.
More silence.
“Yes.”

“I know.”
“You let it cost me.”
His breathing changed. Not dramatic sobbing. Just the rough, uneven breathing of a man who finally sees the shape of his own cowardice and has nowhere left to step around it.
“I did,” he said.

We entered the courtroom.

The judge turned one page, then another. Paper shifted. A pen clicked once. The room was so quiet I could hear someone cough in the hallway outside.
“The law is clear,” he said. “The owner of record has followed procedure. The occupants were given notice and an opportunity to remedy. Judgment for the plaintiff. Twenty-one days to vacate.”
Amber’s face changed first.
Not all at once.
Her lips lost color. Then the muscles around her eyes tightened. Then her right hand went flat against the table as though the furniture had tilted and she needed to steady herself. Brandon stared ahead, unmoving, like a man who had already imagined the ruling and still wasn’t ready to hear it aloud.
